A power cut is rarely convenient. It might happen halfway through cooking dinner, during a stormy night, or when you need to keep a rural camera, router or medical device running. Knowing how to use a power station during an outage means you can keep the essentials going without relying on candles, car batteries or guesswork.
A portable power station is a rechargeable battery with built-in mains sockets, USB ports and often 12V outputs. Unlike a petrol generator, it runs silently and produces no fumes, so it can be used safely indoors. The key is to choose the right capacity, connect only suitable equipment and have a plan before the lights go out.
Start with the devices that matter most
During an outage, a power station is most useful when it supports a small number of essential devices rather than trying to power the whole house. For many homes, that means a broadband router, a phone, a lamp and perhaps a laptop. For rural homes, farms and small sites, it may also mean a 4G router, a security camera hub, a monitor or a small refrigeration need.
A router may use only 10 to 20 watts, while a laptop often draws 40 to 100 watts depending on the task and its charging state. These are realistic loads for a compact power station. A kettle, electric heater, tumble dryer, immersion heater or standard microwave is very different: these appliances draw high wattage and will either drain a battery rapidly or exceed the station’s output limit.
It helps to split equipment into three groups before an outage happens: essential, useful and non-essential. Keeping communications, lighting and security online should come first. Comfort appliances can wait until mains power returns.
Check watts before you plug anything in
Every power station has two figures worth understanding: battery capacity, normally measured in watt-hours (Wh), and maximum output, measured in watts (W).
Capacity indicates how much energy is stored. Output tells you how much power the station can supply at one time. A 500Wh power station might have enough stored energy to run a 10W router for many hours, but if its maximum AC output is 500W, it cannot run a 2,000W kettle at all.
Look at the label on the device’s mains adaptor or appliance. You may see its power use shown in watts. If only volts and amps are listed, multiply them together for an approximate wattage. For example, a 12V, 2A router adaptor uses up to 24W.
A simple runtime estimate is:
Power station capacity in Wh ÷ device wattage = approximate hours of runtime
In real use, reduce that figure by around 10 to 20 per cent for energy lost during conversion, especially when using a mains socket. A 500Wh unit powering a 20W router may therefore provide around 20 hours rather than the theoretical 25. Runtime can also be shorter if the router is working hard, charging devices are connected, or the battery is cold.
If you want to run several devices, add their wattage together. A 15W router, 10W LED lamp, 60W laptop and 20W camera recorder create a combined load of roughly 105W. This is manageable for many mid-sized units, but the stored capacity still determines how long it will last.
How to use a power station during an outage safely
Set the power station on a stable, dry surface with space around its ventilation openings. Most units are quiet, but they may use an internal fan under heavier loads. Keep it away from sinks, open windows, wet footwear and anywhere it could be knocked over.
Charge it fully while mains electricity is available. If your area is prone to short interruptions, keeping a unit between roughly 60 and 100 per cent charge gives you a practical reserve. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for long-term storage, as batteries should not usually be left completely flat.
When the power goes out, switch off or unplug non-essential equipment first. Then turn on the power station and connect priority devices one at a time. This gives you a clear view of the live wattage on the display and avoids an unexpected overload. Start with your router or 4G connectivity, then phones, lighting and any security equipment that needs continuous power.
Where possible, charge phones and tablets directly from USB-C or USB-A ports rather than using a mains plug and charger. It is generally more energy efficient and leaves the AC sockets available for equipment that genuinely needs them.
Do not connect a portable power station directly to your home’s consumer unit or wall sockets. Feeding power back into household wiring requires correctly specified changeover equipment and professional installation. A portable unit should power individual appliances plugged into it, unless a qualified electrician has installed a compatible home backup arrangement.
Keep broadband, WiFi and security working
For many households, the router is the first item to plug in. Mobile data can become congested during widespread outages, while a powered broadband connection keeps messaging, work access and smart home controls available. However, broadband will only work if the local network infrastructure remains powered too. Fibre services often continue for a period, but this can vary by area and provider.
If you use a mesh WiFi system, begin by powering the main router and primary mesh unit. Add satellite units only if you need coverage elsewhere in the property. This reduces unnecessary drain.
Security cameras need a little planning. A wired recorder, network switch and router may all need power for local recording and remote viewing. Battery and solar cameras can continue independently, but their WiFi connection may not. For a camera covering a gate, shed, stable or livestock area, keeping the router and any required hub on the power station is often the most useful outage setup.
A 4G camera is an alternative where fixed broadband is unavailable, although its solar panel, battery level and mobile signal will determine how long it can operate. Check camera notifications after an outage starts so you know whether the connection is still live rather than assuming it is.
Choose the right size for your home
Small power stations are ideal for phones, lights, routers and occasional laptop use. They are easy to carry and useful for a few hours of backup, but they are not intended for high-demand appliances.
A mid-capacity unit suits households that want to maintain connectivity and run several low-power items overnight. It can be a sensible choice for a home office, a security setup or a rural property where restoring communications quickly matters.
Larger power stations offer longer runtime and higher output, making them more suitable for refrigeration, power tools or a more extensive backup plan. They are heavier and cost more, so it is worth basing the decision on your actual devices rather than buying capacity you will never use.
Consider charging options as well. Mains charging is simplest when electricity returns. Car charging can be useful while travelling or at a remote site. Solar charging provides extra independence during a prolonged outage, though panel size, daylight, cloud cover and season all affect performance. In winter, solar is best treated as a helpful top-up rather than a guaranteed full recharge in a few hours.
Avoid the common mistakes
The most common mistake is saving the power station for later, then discovering it is empty. Make a habit of checking its charge after you have used it for camping, work or a day away from home. A brief monthly check is usually enough to catch a flat battery, missing cable or switched-off socket.
Another is overlooking startup power. Some appliances draw a higher surge when they first start, especially compressors and motors. A small fridge may have a modest running wattage but still need a station with enough surge capability to start reliably. Check both the appliance requirement and the power station’s rated and surge output before relying on it.
Finally, do not run extension leads through doorways, under rugs or across damp floors. Keep cables tidy, avoid overloading multiway adaptors and use only undamaged leads. A backup setup should make a difficult evening easier, not introduce a new safety risk.
Build an outage kit before you need it
Store your charged power station near the equipment it is likely to support, along with the correct charging leads, a torch and a labelled extension lead if needed. Keep a note of the devices you plan to run and their approximate wattage. This takes the pressure out of making decisions in the dark.
For homes that depend on connected security, rural monitoring or reliable WiFi, a portable power station is a practical layer of resilience. Choose it around the loads you genuinely need, test the setup on an ordinary evening, and the next outage will feel far more manageable.
