A new router or mesh system can only do so much if it starts life behind the television, on the floor, or in a cupboard under the stairs. The most effective router placement tips are often the simplest: put the WiFi source where your household actually needs it, keep it clear of obstacles, and give the signal a sensible route through the building.
That matters in real homes, where WiFi now supports more than mobile phones and laptops. Video doorbells, indoor cameras, smart plugs, robot vacuums, streaming televisions and garden office equipment all compete for a dependable connection. A weak signal can look like a product problem when it is really a placement problem.
Start in the centre of the area you use
WiFi spreads out from the router, so a central position usually gives the best overall result. In a typical house, this means a shelf, sideboard or open table in the main living area rather than a far corner of the kitchen or bedroom. Aim for a spot that is as close as practical to the middle of the rooms where you use devices most.
There is one obvious complication: the broadband line may enter the house in an inconvenient place. If the router must stay beside that connection point, a longer Ethernet cable can allow you to move it to a more useful open location. In larger homes, it may make more sense to use a mesh WiFi system instead. A mesh setup uses multiple units to bring coverage closer to the rooms, upstairs spaces or outbuildings that need it.
Think about your priority areas before choosing a location. A family that streams in the sitting room and works upstairs has different needs from a rural property owner relying on a camera at the garden gate. The centre of the building is a good starting point, not an unbreakable rule.
Give the router height and breathing room
A router on the floor has to send much of its signal through furniture, people and building materials before it reaches your devices. Raising it to shelf or table height can make a noticeable difference. Keep it upright or positioned as the manufacturer intends, and leave clear space around it for airflow and signal spread.
Avoid placing it inside a closed cabinet, a television unit or a crowded utility press. These places are tidy, but they are poor for wireless coverage and can trap heat around the equipment. If the router has external aerials, position them according to the instructions. On many models, having one vertical and one horizontal can help serve devices held in different orientations, but the layout depends on the specific unit.
It is also worth checking what surrounds the router. Large televisions, speakers, mirrors, fish tanks and dense bookcases can all reduce or redirect signal. You do not need an empty room, but the router should not be boxed in by heavy objects.
Keep away from common sources of interference
Some household items use frequencies close to the 2.4 GHz WiFi band. That does not mean they will always cause trouble, but it explains why WiFi can become unreliable at particular times or in particular rooms. Microwaves, older cordless phones, baby monitors and some wireless audio equipment are common examples.
Try not to place the router directly beside a microwave, behind a television, or next to a large bank of electrical equipment. A metre or two of separation can be helpful. If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, use them appropriately. The 2.4 GHz band generally travels further and gets through walls more easily, while 5 GHz is often faster at shorter range and can be less congested.
For smart cameras and outdoor devices, 2.4 GHz is frequently the practical choice because range matters more than peak speed. For a laptop, television or games console near the router, 5 GHz may provide better performance. Modern routers may manage this automatically, but placement still affects both bands.
Router placement tips for walls, floors and extensions
Walls are not equal. Plasterboard partitions are usually easier for WiFi to pass through than thick stone, concrete, foil-backed insulation or metal-framed walls. Older Irish homes can have solid internal walls that weaken coverage quickly, while modern extensions may include insulation materials that make a once-good signal struggle to reach the new room.
Floors can be equally challenging. If the router is downstairs at one end of the house, an upstairs bedroom at the opposite end may receive a very weak connection. Moving the router to a central downstairs position may improve matters, but it cannot defeat every structural barrier.
Garden offices, sheds and detached garages need a realistic plan. WiFi may reach a nearby timber garden room, especially with a well-placed mesh node near the house-facing wall. A stone shed, metal-clad building or longer distance is different. In those cases, a wired connection, a purpose-built outdoor network solution, or a separate 4G connection may be more dependable than trying to stretch a household router beyond its useful range.
Do not put a mesh node in the dead zone and expect it to repair the signal. Each node needs a strong enough connection back to the main router. Place the first extra unit roughly between the router and the problem area, where the signal is still good. Then test the far room or outdoor space before adding another unit.
Do not hide it beside the broadband box
The small box where your broadband arrives is not necessarily the best home for your WiFi router. It is often near the front door, in a hall cupboard or close to the electrical consumer unit, which can be a poor location for coverage. If your provider equipment and router are separate, connect them with Ethernet and position the router elsewhere where possible.
If you use an all-in-one provider router and cannot relocate it, you still have options. Turning off its WiFi and adding a mesh system or a separate access point can improve coverage without changing your broadband service. This approach is useful where the existing router has to remain near the incoming line but your cameras, smart devices and family devices are spread across a larger property.
Test where devices actually live
A speed test beside the router tells you very little about the connection at your front door, on the landing, in the back bedroom or at the garden gate. Walk around with a mobile phone and check signal strength and loading performance in the places that matter. Test at the time of day when the network is busiest too, especially if several people stream or work from home.
For security devices, test from the device location rather than from the sofa. A video doorbell might show a strong connection at the front hall but struggle at the gate because of an exterior wall, a metal pillar or distance from the house. Solar and 4G cameras have different connectivity considerations, but any WiFi-based camera needs a stable signal before it can provide dependable alerts and live viewing.
When testing, make one change at a time. Move the router, wait for devices to reconnect, and check the result again. It is easy to lose track of what improved the connection when you alter placement, settings and equipment all at once.
Know when placement is not the whole answer
Better placement cannot create broadband speed that is not available, and it cannot always cover a long, stone-built property from one router. If WiFi remains poor after moving the router to an open, central and elevated position, consider whether the equipment matches the job.
A larger house may need mesh WiFi. A home with many cameras, smart devices and users may benefit from a newer router with greater capacity. A rural site or remote shed may be better served by 4G equipment or an independent connection rather than a marginal WiFi signal.
